Tentsmuir beach project

Beach Project year 2 (13th September 2010)

Another year in Architecture has begun, and what better way to do this than to get the whole of first and second year to go to Tentsmuir beach to build shelters. It was the same format as last year except for the fact that we were the “knowledgeable” older students...

Once again we had to design a shelter from what we could salvage around us i.e. completely vernacular. There was 3 second years and 2 first years in our group. With a couple of tinnies and some enthusiastic first years, we soon got to work.

We took a while to choose our site because we decided not to go to the beach; instead we chose a sit in the forest. We wanted a completely flat site with quite a bit of protection but also somewhere that could be accessed easily from the pathways that were close by.

We designed a shelter which was inspired by the idea of a bird’s nest which was supposed to be discreet within its surroundings. There was a pathway which leads you to this relaxation/thinking spot. Along this pathway, there were vertical elements which guided you to the only access point which was meant to entice you in. In plan the shelter looks like a spiralling sea shell. When sitting within the shelter its gives you the feeling of being surrounded and cosy because the walls around the centre were built higher, this gave you protection from the wind.

The shelter was built from large branches and twigs that we found around the forest. The central seating area was covered in leaves which act as an insulating layer from the cold ground.
